How to become a good reader?… In many previous articles, I was sharing some books to benefit more from them, but I noticed that some say that they do not like reading books or even reading long articles sometimes if you are one of those people and want to turn from someone who does not like to read to a good reader I think this is about to happen after you finish reading this article.
How to become a good reader?
Why don’t you like reading?
- The first step to becoming a good reader is to know why you don’t like reading. I totally understand that everyone has their own preferences and that we don’t all have to be the same in the end, but in the case of reading it is quite different.
- First of all, let’s explore the main reasons why most people do not want to read so that we can provide effective solutions to them.
Almost feeling bored is the biggest motive for not wanting to read for many people, and you will find that most of those who do not like reading say phrases that express boredom towards it or even accuse reading of being a boring activity until this has become a reality for them.
This boredom may be due to your previous experiences of reading or being forced to read boring textbooks at an early age, or because you are more prone to strenuous activities that require physical effort, or even your preference for other sources of knowledge.
2. Lack of time
One of the other most important reasons is the lack of time to read as a result of working for long periods of time or exposure to many other distractions such as social networking sites or an unorganized lifestyle, etc., as well as procrastination and the inability to commit and form positive habits for long periods.
3. Not being able to choose or buy books
For some people, especially as we live in the Arab world, getting really good and useful books is not an easy thing and in many cases, it is expensive and takes a lot of time.
Or it may be that you have a real desire to read but do not know where to start, and this is what we will try to answer in this article as well.
Why do you need to be a good reader?
Before you know how to become a good reader you must first know why you really need to be?
I’m not talking here about the benefits of reading, as you will find hundreds of other articles talking about it with a simple Google search, I am talking about the aspect related to the nature of your freelance work and being a freelancer.
One of the biggest benefits of becoming a good reader is that you will become more motivated and willing to work when you learn about a new idea or a different way of doing what you are already doing.
The evidence for this is that many of those who read such articles that I write, usually tell me that they are working more and some even share with me the results of implementing an idea or method that I have explained or talked about.
How to Become a Good Reader? (Executive Side)
Now that you know exactly why you need to read books, it’s time to share with you precise implementation steps that will help you transition from someone who doesn’t like reading to a good reader.
In this regard, I would like to divide the executive aspect into two phases:
The preparation stage is the easiest and most important stage as well, at this stage, you will take simple steps until you are sure that you are ready to start reading.
1. Read for fun
If you are a person who hates reading, as I mentioned earlier, and want to become a good reader, you should not start with a 600-page book, for example, or talk about a topic that is difficult for you to understand or even that you do not like at all.
- You should start gradually at the beginning, and the most important also is to realize that you are trying to acquire the habit of reading and not to be a good straight reader because if you want to become Rafael Nadal, you must first improve the use of the racket.
2. Choose the right book
Now you’re preparing to read, and of course, what’s on your mind is what you’re going to read, isn’t it?
As I mentioned in the previous step, the best point to start with is to read for pleasure first, not for interest.
But suppose you have already passed that stage and need to read for interest, how do you choose the right book? And how do you even finish reading the book without getting bored or distracted? How do you get the most out of the book?
Unfortunately, these are questions that require a lot of experience and expertise to be able to answer them or judge a book (or even a writer) and know before you delve into the book or topic whether it is really suitable for you or not.
But fortunately, there is a book that actually contains that information that was recommended by my friend Ahmed Massad and I went through it and I can tell you that it is very cool.
3. Designate a place and environment that helps you read
How would you like to read? Do you know the answer to this question? Some people prefer to read books and others prefer to read them in PDF or any other electronic format, each of them has its advantages, of course, but the important thing is to know your preferred way of reading.
For example, reading books in their tangible form may motivate you to read and allow you to feel progress or even share your personal thoughts inside the book, so it becomes a part of you, while reading e-books may be easier and more economical for many, in addition to making it easier for you to access information with a quick search.
4. If you prefer reading from books
You will need to allocate a place for it near your favorite place to read, which we will talk about in the implementation phase.
5. If you prefer e-reading
- A lot of people are becoming e-reader these days, look at the difference in the forecast between e-book sales in 2014 and 2018 as well, where it is expected to exceed the sales of printed books and it has already happened!
- If you are one of those people who prefer e-reading, I advise you to try the Kindle e-reader, which provides you with thousands of books that you can get directly from the Amazon Kindle without the need to buy books and wait for them, and it is also cheaper.
The implementation stage is the most important stage because before you start reading the first book you will face some difficulties either in getting started or continuing to read for a longer period.
At this point, I will tell you some steps that you can take to face these difficulties and start reading or even continue reading for a longer time:
1. Select the appropriate time to read
When considering starting an activity like reading, you might use phrases like “now is not the time to read” to procrastinate, so you should know the best time for you to start with a 5 to 15 minute continuous reading session.
Some people like to read in the morning or in direct sunlight, and others like a specific place to read, such as a balcony, rooftop, or even their own office.
2. Start even if you only read one page
Remember when I talked about how to acquire and form habits? You can definitely read the article, especially since you will need it to form the habit of reading anyway.
But the idea that I want to share with you in this article is to just tell yourself that you want to start reading and not to read for a long time, and by this, I mean not to be extreme and set yourself difficult challenges at the beginning such as reading the whole book in the first session or a large number of pages cash all in one.
3. Browse the book before you read it
You will encounter this stage even if you read every day, which is the hesitation when you start reading a new book because you do not yet know if it is right for you and worth your time or not?
The best way to get rid of that feeling is to browse, and I think that’s what you do too before you start reading just about anything.
Perhaps even before you start reading this article, you quickly browse through it and see all its parts and make sure that it is suitable for you and then come back again to start reading it or read the part you want to know inside it.
4. Read 50 pages, then decide
This rule is also applied by most of us literally, if you are watching a movie and after 15 minutes you feel that it is not suitable for you or you do not like it, will you bother to watch it to the end? of course not! The same goes for books as well.
Simply if you are reading a book and find that the writer presents a topic from a point of view that you do not accept or do not believe in the validity of what he is saying or that it is too difficult for you to understand easily, read-only 50 pages of the book and then you can decide whether you really want to continue reading or whether You better read something else.
5. Get rid of distractions
Well, there’s only one thing left to get you ready to start reading, and that of course is eliminating distractions.
Before you start reading you should know that you should not be interrupted in any way, close your room door and make sure there is nothing else you need to do for at least 15 minutes, but hey did you forget your phone?
In fact, your phone is the main source of distraction, so you should put it in Do Not Disturb Mode so that it does not make any sound, and even better, it is not next to you at all.
