Who are you accountable to? No one? Oh, that’s right! Accountability these days is seen as an inconvenience. We are free moral agents and more than being free moral agents, we do not like being told what to do, when to do it and how to do it. It is alluring to be able to live on our terms.
Accountability these days is not seen often
I heard someone make a statement recently about humans being generally wired to be lazy, it sounded like a weird statement to make, but the truth remains that without a pushing force, humans could get so relaxed, unbelievably relaxed, and remain at a pathetic level of mediocrity.
The disappearance of accountability from our society has far-reaching effects, they run so deep, and can easily be linked to the failure of leadership in this country. Leaders now brazenly loot and take actions that benefit them only because no one can bring them to give an account of what has been entrusted in their hands.
Beyond being in danger of being so relaxed, I don’t think we realize the other disadvantages inherent in being accountable to no one. Some people may say, ”I am not accountable to any human, I am only accountable to God”, that is an impressive statement to make but I believe it is hugely sentimental and misguided.
We all are accountable to the supreme being, both now and hereafter, we are accountable to God. But do you have someone who is an inspiration, a safety net, a guide, and support as you make decisions? When you get an idea, who do you run it by?. Someone, to help you look at all the angles of the decision you are about to make and help you think of every possible outcome?
My time in the School of Architecture has helped me to realize that life is never meant to be lived alone. There will always be people who have gone through the path you are about to take, we should be willing to be ”accountable” to these people.
”…but in the multitude of counselors, there is safety”, this statement from the good book stays valid and has aged properly. Therefore when you are required to report actions taken or give account to a superior, see it as an opportunity to be helped.
In the same vein, when someone is accountable to you, give your best and correct out of love, not pride.
