Although the world has changed in the last forty years, the school education system has remained the same for 200 years. This system was created to bring people to the factories, but today, with this new economy, this system is not working. In the world, thousands of young people suffer from what happens behind bars and the high walls of schools; and that is why many psychologists and scientists studied this phenomenon. The aim of this study is to see if the current educational system benefits or damages human development.
Governments assembled together the educational system with the industrial revolution. The objective of this was to teach people to work in factories so that they think as little as possible, and above all not to be mistaken, because the mistake was a reason to be punished.
There is a gigantic problem in the education of almost everywhere: Existing the tendency to want to put children of early age in degrees which do not correspond to them, the phenomenon called accumulative advantage occurs, where the more energetic and prepared children will get more attention than the less biologically developed and slower ones, which will marginalize them even more so as they do not get an education of the same quality as the rest, and the others will instead be driven by this as they will get more attention and more rigorous training.
This happens in the United States because of the problems of its educational system and its relationship with productivity ideas. In less developed countries, cuts and low education budgets prevent teachers from taking care of those who lose out.
The seemingly most insignificant variables can define over one might think, so let’s dive into education and its implications. Theoretically, education should increase the IQ and thus ensure success, however, the IQ does not guarantee professional or social success. An exhaustive study with gifted people showed that even with differences of twenty points, individuals finished in fairly similar positions. Other data also shows that gifted people do not end up being the majority in terms of significant contributions to humanity or even in representing great world-class positions, and this is because success involves more variables than simply IQ.
The educational system is a great web of power that prepares and indoctrinates future citizens for tomorrow, and this acclimatizes them to what they will have to endure later. For example, enduring harassment, ridicule, exclusion, etc. Many times what children learn in the educational system is the obvious fact the world is a jungle where the “save whoever can” principle works. This will prepare a citizen to be indifferent to social injustices, and neither will he/she demands solidarity for him/herself. Therefore, this system turns an individual into someone much more malleable, easier to manipulate, and more isolated; convincing him/her no one will be out there to create a network of solidarity with him/her.
Each human being is different, so it is here where we must ask ourselves why governments strive to educate everyone in the same way. In the vast majority of the time, schools and other educational institutes indoctrinate children to compete among themselves, which is terribly harmful. Personally, my experience at school was martyrdom. Most teachers based their teaching method on the terror and fear they could instill in their students.
To illustrate, researchers show the educational system in Finland really helps children, since before they start classes they receive a trial period in which they help them and make them notice a problem regardless of the problems they may have with your learning or your memory; contrary to what happens in schools on the American continent.
Psychologist Howard Gardner says there are different types of multiple intelligences and therefore teaching everyone the same way hurts.
A poet is not better than a mathematician, nor is a mathematician better than a poet; both are different people, however, the current educational system insists on giving importance only to the exact sciences. As Albert Einstein said: If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will believe all its life that it is stupid.
How many of us were affected by not having mathematical intelligence?
We often felt the system did not fit with us and we did not fit with the system. In almost all countries, a large proportion of teachers are the consequence of professional failure. This is why there are so many theoretical teachers and very few practical teachers. However, these practical teachers are those who possess the greatest possibility of achieving an immediate improvement in the students. After interviewing many teachers, the conclusion was that most of them are not happy.
Most of these people are subject to act as they have been told to act, and they see those who want to be innovative in their teaching methods as a hindrance or as someone who does not want to abide by the rules; so the frustration ends up being as great in the students as in the teachers. Because of this, they force teachers to teach their classes in a certain way, so many teachers inhibit themselves from carrying out the teaching work by their own method.
As if this were not enough, we must also suffer the discrimination and cruelty which occurs in these types of places. Such is the case which Alba Reyes talked about, a Colombian mother of the deceased student Sergio Reyes, who had to end his life when he suffered discrimination from his teachers and the school psychologist for having openly declared himself bisexual.
Harmful people who were forced by the school to file a criminal complaint against him persecuted and harassed this boy. It was difficult listening to the story of the mother of this student who committed suicide because of everything he suffered within the educational system. Around the world, three to four students commit suicide because of the damn bullying. We can also see the case of Iñaki Zubizarreta, a former Spaniard Olympic player, who for having reached a height of one meter and eighty centimeters when he was eleven years old, his teacher discriminated against him and would not let him out during recesses because she said he would hurt someone. In his youth, this man also had a suicide attempt because of the harassment he suffered from students from the same school to the point where he almost died from the blows they inflicted on him.
It is clear this type of “education” does nothing more than teach us to be automatons who do not think, besides taking away the right we have to demand to be treated with respect and equality.
Therefore, if you are a father/mother, the best you can do for your kids is to hire a home school service, so your kids would be free from that archaic environment. Furthermore, it was demonstrated the kids who are taught by the home school system develop better cognitive development and better social skills. About what you just read, I think it is unnecessary to advise you what to do about this, just forget what you learned there about how to develop yourself in society, otherwise, you will be just one more individual “taken off from the mold”, with all the frustrations, traumas, and conjectures which will not let you develop all the potential you possess. However, maybe now you are a young person who is near to finish his/her last high school year and doesn’t know what kind of career to choose after this. Well, the best you can do is to study a field where you can be an independent worker, a field in which you will not depend on some big company to be hired.
Kinds of careers
There are two kinds of careers: the one in which you will depend on certain industry fields to get a job, and the one which can give you the easiness to work by yourself and for yourself. I emphasize once again the important fact about serving people (as much as your serve, more earnings for you).
Therefore, if you work for someone else, then you will be trapped in a system where you will work for the dreams of your employer instead of working for your dreams. Not to mention you will become an automat not capable to develop bright business ideas because you will have to think for the interests of the company where you work and not in yours. The time this will consume you will be so big that you will not have enough time to think about your goals and how to get them.
