A volcano is a natural phenomenon that occurs when molten rocks called magma erupts on the surface of the earth, this natural occurrence takes a long period to occur. One case scenario that misplaced a huge population happened this year in Congo, On May 22nd of this year, over 1000 homes were destroyed when Mt Nyiragongo erupted and around 32 people lost their lives.
According to Scientists this type of Volcano eruption is a stratovolcano and can be dangerous especially to the population living at the foot of the mountain, the lava flow from the mountain can reach 10km/hr very fast, reports from the government suggests that the best way to cater for the affected people is to consider the specific needs of people with disability, children, and the elderly people.
The World Health Organization(WHO) has also strengthened epidemiological lookout in the North Kivu province East of Congo to mitigate the situation of the pandemic. Other issues that World Health Organization has paid attention to in this region include surveillance of the COVID-19, Cholera, and other chronic diseases.
HOW CONGO IS RESPONDING TO NYIRAGONGO ERUPTION
After the eruption, five days later the governor of the North Kivu made sure that part of the population in Goma was evacuated to a safer region away from the eruption in Nyiragongo. It has also been estimated that around 400, 000 people were affected by the Volcano and the government ensured that enough supply of food, clean water, and medical care has been rendered to the displaced people.
A positive response has been shown by other countries and Non-governmental organizations by supporting the people of Congo in these hard times, countries like Rwanda have accepted the victims of Volcano to their borders as they wait for more help from the government. We hope those families that separated from their loved ones reunite again and be able to take care of each other.
