We all are aware of the poor situation prevailing in the world due to covid-19. This pandemic has affected our lives in every aspect. From an educational point of view; we students are left with online education for the continuity of our education due to the lockdown or closure of educational institutions everywhere. As everything has its advantages and disadvantages, this method of conducting online classes has also its pros and cons which will be discussed in this article;
Benefits of conducting online classes:
A way to keep students on track:
Education holds the key to the prosperity of every nation and this fact cannot be denied. Well, online education was the only way students could keep themselves in touch with their studies. Delivering lectures online and conducting online exams is a quality method that bounds students to be punctual with their attendance and take the class on time. Moreover, we all agree to this fact that a student’s mind decays gradually i.e. loses all of the knowledge if he or she leaves it to rot and not revise or use it.
Innovations in learning techniques:
In contrast to physical education, the online education system has introduced many new ways. Some students can improve their learning by visual representation while others may get more comprehension by listening to audio lectures. Similarly, some students can memorize their lecture more effectively if it is drawn diagrammatically or displayed as presentation slides by the teacher online. He or she can also save that slide for repeated revision.
E-learning is accessible 24 hours a day to every student. You can take the class by sitting comfortably at home. All you need to do is to make sure you have a mobile or computer with internet access.
Online classes are much economical:
The virtual class system is much affordable as students don’t need to pay for their transportation or notes. Every material is provided to them via pdf, presentation slides, and emails. So it is a much better system with reduced financial expenditures.
It requires effort and improvement to become as good a student as you were during physical classes. This article will help you want to know more about how to learn online effectively.
Cons of online education:
As everything has its gains and losses, there are certain disadvantages of virtual education which are mentioned below:
A Distracted platform for gaining knowledge:
Although online system exposes many new ways to obtain knowledge, students may get deviated from their lecture due to running applications in their computers. They may open any other social media app during their online class. So the teacher needs to make the lecture interesting because, of course, who would enjoy a ‘monotonous’ lecture!!!
Bad health issues:
Constantly sitting in front of the computer or any electronic device may affect your health. As far as the routine of students is concerned, they have to sit with their laptops for a minimum of 8 hours a day to take the classes, give tests, or do revisions. This will eventually affect their eyes causing swelling of eyes and pain. Moreover, continuous exposure to these dangerous radiations may lead to a headache.
Less social interaction:
Due to online learning platforms, there is a reduced contact between teachers and students. This automatically creates a gap between them, ultimately leading to ineffective learning. It’s because face-to-face interaction between teacher and student is important for effective learning. Moreover, some students feel easier to learn in the company of other students or peers because a proper environment is created in physical classes. That environment is not present in online classes.
Some students may face the problem of slow internet which may result in disrupted connections during their online classes. This will eventually affect their learning process. In addition, some students cannot even afford the facility to use the internet due to financial reasons. So, we should think about using alternatives for such students.
Proper supervision is required:
Online education demands proper supervision of parents over the activities of their children and many parents cannot manage to do this.
To sum up my discussion, I would say that online education provides students with innovative ways of learning if students are given sufficient breaks to avoid constant screen time and are supervised by their guardians properly.
