WHAT HAPPENED IN THE YEAR 2020
The year 2020 has been mostly cloudy for many of us. Yes, the sun still shining on all the parts of the world but for many, its light doesn’t reach as many corners as it should. There were many, myself included, who felt that the last year was a little bit colder than the rest of the years combined. Thousands lost their jobs, a multitude of people had to close down small businesses, and even worse, hundreds and thousands lost precious loved ones. The year 2020 was certainly a hard one for many of us.
In many parts of the world, devastation, remnants of the year that was 2020, is clearly visible. Not like buildings collapsing or houses being torn down, more like the devastation that you feel deep within your gut. We saw the news and continue to see news of used-to-be crowded places now teeming with just a lot of air and space. Beach resorts that used to house 24/7 parties are now filled with only the wind and the sands. Malls that used to buzz with shoppers now only show the weary and bored faces of salesmen and salesladies waiting for customers who will never come. Many parts of the world have quieted down as a result of governments implementing strict measures to try and contain the spread of the deadly virus.
THE THING THAT MADE THE YEAR 2020 LOOK BAD
Because admittedly, the coronavirus has certainly claimed 2020. The dreadful coronavirus took over our lives and ruled the world in the year 2020. It has claimed thousands of lives, many businesses, hundreds and thousands of moments of the year 2020. The virus has taken over the lives of many, turning many people’s lives upside down. Travels, parties, even simple picnics at the park have all been prohibited. With local and international travels having been banned, many people lost the opportunity to be with family during birthdays, holidays, and whatever days. The luxury of being able to sit outside and have a chitchat with friends and neighbors have been taken away from us. Even kids who would have benefited from playing outside have been asked to lay low and stay indoors. The year 2020 has certainly been a different one for many of us. Hard, even, for some.
The thing is, no one ever really said that life would be easy. Living on this earth has never been once described as walking in a garden full of beauties. It is a harsh world to live in, to be honest. Meeting the coronavirus in the year 2020, and knowing that it might last for a couple more, is just another one of life’s silly jokes on humankind. But come to think of it, it makes no big difference really from the occasional earthquakes we get or the heavy storms that come and go. They all make life somewhat a bit harder. If you have a creative mind, you might want to say these are the spices we get to make life tastier.
HOW DID THE WORLD TAKE 2020
Amazingly, man is inherently a fighter. We all have the ability to bounce back from whatever falls from grace we encounter in life. Man is almost always able to bounce back whenever life sends him down through a dark hole full of ugliness. Humans are tough like that, never backing down in the face of adversity.
2020 may indeed have been different than any of the other years we’ve seen in this lifetime. But while it’s been different and hard, it has undeniably paved the way to a beautiful kind of different. A new normal where we can spend more time with the people who matter most in our lives. With the government restricting travels and basically going outside our homes, we now get to spend more time with family.
Where we used to only see them at the end of a long day at work, many of us now actually work from home and spend all our precious time with them. What used to be a thing to have large gatherings for special occasions, now there are only intimate get-togethers. Gatherings are now mostly intended for family members only. Where there once was chaos, now there is only quiet. What used to be a noisy world is now kind of silent with lesser people out on the streets every day.
In a way, the year 2020 came to bring both evil and good. Like a curse that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It wasn’t at all such a bad year when one comes to reflect on the result. Sure it introduced the world to more deaths and more worries. But at the end of the day, I think it also brought out the basic goodness of mankind. We learned to listen more to each other. People from all over started to appreciate what one country can do for another. We learned to care and everyone learned to share. Everyone learned to basically connect.
What a year 2020 has been, indeed. At the end of the day, hard and different are not that bad after all.
