“Never confuse fashion and style. Fashion relies on attainable looks on women and men with unrealistic bodies. Style is about utilizing the best aspects of you”, Stacy London. Fashion and style are used interchangeably and often confused by many people. The question is: are you among the puzzled ones?
If yes, worry no more because these two terms surround you and sometimes define you. They cover things like clothes, accessories, hairstyles, nails, shoes, and many more things.
Not Convinced! let’s analyze them more extensively.
First, fashion is created by many designers. Sometimes it can be due to the designer’s competition. Therefore, it’s not a sole creation and if so, many people will copy and within a shorter time, everyone will be practicing it. Style is a person’s own creation. Nobody has what you have or matching you out there.
Figure it this way. Have you felt what you are wearing does not match what others are wearing? If so, that fashion against style.
Second, even if it is created by many designers, fashion has to be accepted by a group of people, society, or even internationally accepted. Often, some fashions do not live as long as expected. Designers’ competition to push their creativity to be accepted and trended, is one of the many reasons.
On the other hand, style does not need to be accepted widely, its the wearer acceptance that matters. Ahhh! do not get lost, sometimes a family can wear a certain style. A small group can match a certain style but it will lack the weight of a fashion. Fashion acceptance is like a wave, you can even feel it.
Third, for fashion to be accepted and trend, it has to be popularized by influencers, media houses, models, athletes, actors, and actresses. Many brands (ranging from shoes, clothes, jewels, and many others) partners with influential people like musicians or politicians who command a public eye to popularize it.
On the other hand, style needs one person to be popular. Nobody else except you need it, it is you alone! That dress you bought at your own approval is complete proof that you understand what style denotes. This means the style is what brings attention to us directly while fashion our attention is influenced.
Lastly, fashion is subject to change due to external factors like new designs, influencers, and critics. Some fashion dies on approval while others outlive others. New designers or brands come up with new fashion leading to the current one being dropped. Therefore, it is not a one-person choice but what others do. With style, it constant. What connects with you, lives with you as long as you want. You decide when to change it. No external factors can influence you to change it. Jill Chivers, “It’s about honoring your uniqueness and having your outsides match your insides”, sums it well.
To sum it, fashion is what is out there, that trending and versatile matter. It can be created by designers. Note, not one designer but many designers. Simply, what everyone is wearing or doing at a certain time. On the other hand, style is unique, what you choose to wear or do. It’s one’s choice against what is out there.
Fashion can take away our self-esteem and courage to do what we want. Style builds us to accept what we want and do it with pride.
