Social media can be described as the use of computer-based technology with the help of the internet to allow the sharing of thoughts, information, and ideas. The most popular social media platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wechat, Whatsapp, and Snapchat. The rise of social media has led to positive and negative effects on people’s psychology.
the positive side of social media
Which are the effects on their minds and behavior. firstly, Social media brings a sense of belonging. this sense makes people happy through sharing happiness and love with others. but it’s no all good, as Social media also have negative effects on people. for example, it causes depression and anxiety and can lead to low self-esteem. (Walton, 2020)
According to Maslow’s hierarchy model of needs, a sense of belonging occupies the third-ranking in the model (Maslow, 2018).
This means people need to feel that they belong somewhere. or they are among a certain group of people. Most social media platforms have the capability to create groups consisting of people having things in common. so, they can interact freely. those people can be family, friends, colleagues who share the same ideologies. or even face common challenges. The groups have no geographical boundaries in comparison to one-on-one interactions. With the ability to great groups, social media has really lead to people having a sense of belonging.
The emergence of creative media on social media has increased people’s happiness index in the world. It is easier these days for one to just scroll on their phones or computer screen to afford a smile and share the item or post to other people. In turn, if those people that receive the sent posts like them they tend to share with other people. hence, creating a vigorous sense of happiness and show of love. from this perspective, social media has tremendously lead to improve people’s psychology by generating happiness.
the negative side of social media
Social media has become a leading cause of depression and anxiety, as a result of its excessive use. Face-to-face interactions help boost human health and moods. Whereas these days people tend to give so much priority to social media in contrast to eye-to-eye interaction. physical interaction help bolster people’s moods and feelings.
social media lacks that intimate interaction. due to that, it can cause disorder which may lead to anxiety and depression. hence, social media affects negatively on people’s psychology.
Most social media platforms have the like and comment sections where one leaves a comment or just indicate if they have liked the post or not. When people share photos of themselves or family members and not getting the reception they intended to have, I mean, many likes or appealing comments. this can result in them having low self-esteem. also, those inferior thoughts about ego can takeover by making a comparison with other people. which, in turn, can result in having a negative body image oneself. so, This psychologically affects people negatively adversely. (Robinson, 2020).
Since the human being is a social creature, we need each other companionship to excel in life. Social media has enabled this connection and this has led to positive and negative effects on people’s psychology. Thus, we can say, social media have both sides of the coin. it can improve or inhibit people’s psychology.
