Many people are struggling to find themselves wearing a genuine smile these days. No matter where generations you came from, there are existing problems that may tamper with our lives. Life itself is imperfect, and the world is a living mess filled with struggles and competition. Because of that, we often find ourselves wondering if there are easy ways out of everything. We always desire to become happy, and sometimes we often consider if we can get happiness in our decisions. Today, people keep finding contentment in a lot of different ways. It proves we desired to be happy, but for some reason, we sometimes fail to see it.
Many thought finding happiness is like a treasure hunt adventures we have watched from TV shows. Although the difference is, there is no map to guide us from where it is located. It may be a chase of goose as we venture around the world or a nearly impossible endeavor. People always get lost in search of happiness because we are “finding” it. Expecting we will find something or somewhere out there that can give us the true happiness we seek for. The truth is it is not meant to be seen. Happiness is meant to be “created” through our perception. There are things when viewed in a proper way can make a huge change in your life:
It is rewarding to witness frames of diplomas and trophies displayed on the walls. The grandeur feeling of accomplishment is reminiscing of the journey you walked to get into your current place. The point of triumph in your life will provide you a positive mood, but it is certainly not true happiness. They provide temporary fulfillment and gives us the mindset of “I’ll be happy when I get this.” As soon as you have that in your head, the competition will drain you. Losing will only makes your motivation crumbles. And most apparently, you will lose into a pursuit of superficial happiness. It is good to gain things you are proud of but don’t mistake it as an investment to make you feel happy.
A well-known writer who was the brains behind the Harry Potter series, J.K Rowling, has experienced that achievements are not essential to attain happiness. She lived as a single mother, and her struggles made her suffer from suicidal thoughts and tried cognitive behavioral therapy. After that, she engaged herself in writing Harry Potter, and since then, she has found her true happiness. “My personal happiness lies within knowing that life is no checklist of achievements. Qualifications are not what makes your life,” she said.
Sometimes life puts us into the place we don’t like. Humans strive to be better, and this attitude of ours makes us susceptible to insatiable greed. We tend to desire to get what we don’t have and be someone we are not. Some people value something that isn’t there in front of them. This discontentment only leads to despair in the end.
To feel contentment, change your perception, and you will see the bright side of things around you. You may not have the latest smartphone in the market or live a life of luxury, unlike the idols you always see in social media. However, you still have things to be thankful for. Don’t tangle yourself to the idea that objects or status in life may provide you true happiness.
Money, fame, and status are famous for satiating people’s discontentment towards their lives. If those things generate true happiness, then “rich guys being happy all the time.” is a fair generalization.
Failures and Shortcomings
If life itself isn’t enough, we are built with imperfections. These flaws in ourselves made us feel insecure and cautious. The feeling of being judged by others due to our shortcomings hinders us from going outside our comfort zones. It will also stop us from touching our full potential as an individual.
Sometimes failure made us feel disappointed and blamed ourselves. “Why am I like this?” things like self-doubt will not only do us no good but may also provide a negative long term effect on our attitude towards trials. The cowardice to try new things, even giving up to take care of ourselves because we just felt we don’t deserve it anyway.
Change how you view things. Failure is not the end of the road but a process to reach success. If you view failure as a learning experience, you will have your way towards true happiness. Your shortcomings, if viewed in a different light, can ease your negativity towards yourself. Accept yourself of who you are, and you will feel enlighten of the things you can do are what really matters.
True happiness is not something you pursue. It cannot be found through money, fame, or status. It is created based on how we perceive things around us. If we either color the circumstances in a good light, we can feel happiness.
Surprisingly, some people complicate things even though happiness can be achieved in simple ways. By having fun with our close friends or sitting while watching the sun sets on the horizon, it is enough to make our mind at peace and calm. Happiness can be achieved through deep connections between yourself and other close relationships you have in life. Sometimes, we just look a little farther away when the answer is right under our noses.
Being happy isn’t originated by getting life’s most outstanding achievements, good status, being rich and famous. Happiness happens to all of us when we view things in a positive light. It is a simple evaluation that there is no need for formulas or maps. Happiness is there if we choose it to be there.
