When people hear the word “programming” or “coding” they think it’s this high tech thing that only people of certain IQ can do. They think that you need to be some sort of computer genius to do it, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Programming languages are much like our everyday languages, you want to convey certain information you summon your nouns, verbs, adjectives, and so on. The same thing happens in the world of computer programming, except this time you tell the computer what to say or do and it does it for you. They are very compliant, our friends the computers, as long as you give them the right command. In this article, you will find what you need to start programming in python.
Why Start Programming and Why Python
One reason I think everyone should start programming is that when you start programming, you develop very good problem-solving skills. Programmers are constantly encountering and solving problems of various complexity, and the more you encounter these problems the better you get at solving them. But you don’t only get good at solving programming problems but many other problems too. Just not relationship problems, unfortunately. The other reason is that I strongly believe that computers are going to take over the world someday, and you will want to be on our Supreme overlord’s good side. Also, if you are going to plead for your life you will need to do it in a language that they enjoy.
There are two types of programming languages :
Low-level and high-level programming languages. Low-level programming languages are ones that a computer understands better. These will be machine language or assembly languages. High-level languages are the ones that you humans understand better because they are very close to your ordinary language. There are many kinds of high-level programming languages such as C, C#, Swift, Java, and Python. You are very capable of starting with any one of them without having any prior knowledge of programming concepts. But the one we are going to focus on in this article, and the one most experts will advise you to go with, is Python. The reason is that while they are all high-level languages, Python is more high level than most of them. It’s not only very easy but it is also a very powerful programming language. You can do all sorts of things with python: machine learning, web development, game development, and so on.
Python belongs to a group of languages called interpreted languages. With an interpreted language, you do not have to compile a piece of code before you can run it. You would do this with a compiled language. To compile a code means to convert a code written in a high-level language to machine code. Let’s go ahead and download our interpreter at python.org. Download the latest version, and follow the simple instructions to install it; make sure to download the version for your operating system.
Your First Programme
Once you are done with the installation part, open the Python IDLE. You should have something that looks like this.
Type exactly this “print(“Hello World”)” and press Enter. You should see the text “Hello world” written on the screen. Congratulations, you just wrote your first python program. This is a tradition to the programming world; your first program in any language should be this. It’s much longer in other languages C++ and Java. The next thing you need is a text editor. There are various editors you can choose from such as Vscode, PyCham, Sublime Text, and Vim. They are some of the most popular ones. My favorite is Vscode which you can download here.
Now you have everything you need to start programming in python, hope you enjoy it.
