Mikel Arteta’s innovative tactics keep Arsenal the winner! In December 2019, Arsenal FC relieved Freddie Ljungberg of his temporary position as Arsenal manager. In his place, they appointed Mikel Arteta, a former captain of the London club. Arteta left his position as Pep Guardiola’s assistant to join the Gunners. Since then, Arsenal fans are dreaming again.
The former Everton star has landed two trophies for Arsenal in the nine months he has overseen the club. They defeated Chelsea and Liverpool in the FA Cup and Community shield respectively. It’s important to know that the Spaniard achieved these feats against all odds.
In a bid to keep his team winning, Arteta sets up his team in an innovative tactical approach. This has left Premier League club’s technical departments scratching their heads.
Arteta’s Arsenal team plays in an innovative 3-4-3 formation which utilizes wing-backs. He starts his games with two wing-backs, in which one of them joins the midfield on occasion.
Whenever Arsenal is with the ball, Ainsley Maitland Niles, playing at left wing-back joins the midfield. This plays as a foil to increases the number of Arsenal midfielders. It destabilizes the marking scheme put in place by the opposition. Consequently, the opposition becomes a player short in the middle of the pack.
Secondly, that movement instantly draws an opposition player off his position and usually a player from their right defense. In an instance that attacking channel becomes available for Kieran Tierney to bomb forward and put in crosses. Remember Tierney plays from the central defence. Niles slots back into position the moment Arsenal loses possession of the ball.
In the Midfield, The two defensive midfielders, usually Xhaka and Ceballos form a diamond shape with the two wingers. This happens whenever Arsenal is not in possession in their bid to win back the ball.
Once in possession, Saka comes into the midfield while Aubamayang and Bellerin bomb into the different Channels to connect passes.
Meanwhile, Arteta has improved the ball-playing abilities of his defenders. As a result, they are comfortable playing from the back. This helps the team draw out their opponents upfield. So doing, it creates room for Aubamayang to attack the spaces left. It worked to perfection against Man-City and Liverpool recently.
The 38-year-old former Arsenal captain has improved a lot of players in the team. One of them is Maitland-Niles who was on the brink of leaving. As can be seen, he got a call-up to the English National team recently. This came after the man-of-the-match performance in the win against Liverpool. His stock has risen tremendously since Arteta discovered how to use the U20 World Cup winner.
Judging from the form, Arsenal is in and the confidence radiating in the team; Arsenal is moving in the right direction with Arteta.
