Being students, most of us have always had a few such teachers who inspired us. These teachers are somewhat different from the others. Not all teachers are able to attract their students’ attention. Rather most of the teachers cannot drive their students’ attention even towards the lecture they are delivering. In my view, a good teacher is one who has the capability to steer the attention of students wherever he/she wants. To have this capability a teacher should have certain traits that I am going to discuss in this writing.
“Teaching is the greatest act of optimism”
The first duty of a teacher is to teach the students his/her subject. And this is where every teacher should try to become the best. First, the teacher himself should have a strong command over the subject. He/she should have a complete understanding of the concepts. This is the most important thing as being a teacher, one’s job is to teach. Therefore, a teacher must try to be as good at his subjects as he can.
Then comes the style of teaching. It means that how a teacher delivers his lectures. How he attracts the attention of his students. How much he involves the students in the lecture. And also how long can he keep the backbenchers from falling asleep? All these things define his style. In my view, the best teaching style is one in which there is two-way learning. It happens when the teacher makes sure that his students are equally involved in the lecture. A lecture should be more than simply a lecture. It should be an interactive session between the students and the teacher. Also, there should be an efficient use of multimedia as well as whiteboard/blackboard.
Teachers should try to manage their class-time efficiently. The lecture should be as brief as possible. Still, it should contain all the important things. The teacher should deliver the concept in the best way possible and in the least time possible. Because being a student I know that students cannot remain focused on the lecture for much longer.
Therefore, the teacher has to make the lecture brief. I think that the teacher should focus on the basic things during the lecture. He should try to clear those things that are fundamental to the topic and those that cannot be easily understood through the textbooks. The rest should be left to the students, and they should be encouraged to ask the questions whenever they don’t understand something from the textbook. I have seen many teachers who start their lectures on time but are unable to finish it within class timings. That is not a good thing. A teacher should prepare his lecture according to the given time.
A thing that I have found to be very attractive for students like me is the extracurricular talks. Whenever a teacher starts talking about something interesting, suddenly the whole class becomes attentive. I think that teachers should include such interesting discussions in their classes. For example, one of our teachers always keeps video breaks in his lectures. After 10-15 minutes of his lecture, he shows us something worth watching on the multimedia. Mostly it is a motivational video or a short clip with a moral lesson. What it does is that when students’ thoughts start to stray away topic after ten or fifteen minutes, any such video brings them back to the lecture room.
Another thing that can also be done is that teachers develops the habit of completing the lecture five to ten minutes before the class ends. Then he utilizes this extra time to have some casual talk with the students. He or she can discuss some ongoing issues and the teacher and the students can share their thoughts. The teacher can tell some inspiring stories to the students. He can tell them about moral values, or he can tell them what life has taught him. In short, there should be any kind of discussion. Only that it should be interesting to listen and talk about. The connection that will be built through such talks will also help in improving the students academically.
Frankness between teacher and students
A teacher frank with his students is much better than a rude one. Even if the first one is not so genius and the latter one is a genius. The first thing that the students notice about the teacher is not his academic skills. Rather they observe his attitude towards the students. Therefore, if a teacher wants to become better at teaching, he should also improve his behavior with the students. You may observe that in the present times, the respect for the teachers by their students has declined a lot. But I have seen that a teacher who is good towards students is mostly respected a lot. Teachers should be like a parent to the students. He should treat his pupils just like he would treat his son or daughter.
Teachers should also be open to suggestions and respectful criticism from the students. Of course, there should be limits as to what extent the students can be critical towards the teacher. But there should not be a complete ban on criticism. In my opinion, teachers should encourage the students to give suggestions and to express their views freely within the limits. This will create a healthy environment and pupils studying in such an environment will become better citizens.
Also, the teacher should always be welcoming to the students. He should encourage the students to share their issues with him. He should personally keep an eye on his students and is someone is disturbed, he should look into the matter and help him/her in solving the problems. In such ways, a teacher can play a highly constructive role in the lives of students.
In the end, I would like to say that teachers are role models for their students. Therefore, they should become one. They should be good not only at teaching their academic subjects but also at shaping their pupils to become decent and good citizens of society.
