What exactly is Catharsis?
Catharsis is actually emotional discharge, moral and spiritual renewal, or restoration. A restorative process that makes you get rid of the stress that is building up in you because you are having a mixture of emotions and feelings.
The Concept of Emotion
Humans beings have been installed with an emotional setup. Happiness, anger, sorrow, love, affection, hatred, jealousy, pride, pity, fear, and many forms of these basic ones. These are not only the emotions or feelings, these are actually the reaction of a person towards a situation, a happening, an incident that has stimulated something inside. They demand to be dealt with! This leads us back to our topic: Catharsis.
Catharsis is analogous to getting rid of some painful object
Just like receptors in our body. You feel pain, which is actually a response, a reaction to, for example, a needle that is pricking your body. This pain tells you that something is wrong!
What will happen when these pain receptors are not there? That needle or anything that is damaging your body will keep on doing so because you are not responding appropriately.
The same is the case with emotions. The emotions and feelings are your body’s response to some outside happening or ongoing. That reaction or response is actually body’s way to cope with it!
Our very own
We see people telling us to stop weeping when there is a loss. Sometimes, we are telling others to be ashamed of having a fear of something. Many of us take pride in not being overwhelmed by our emotions, that we are strong because we cannot be emotionally blackmailed. At most, boys are more allowed to show anger, and girls are more allowed to fear and weep. That’s it!
Why not opening up is bad?
A society where positivity is overrated, piling of negative emotions can actually be unhealthy. All we hear is “don’t worry”, “everything will be alright”, “don’t be ungrateful, it’s a sin”, whenever a person is opening up. Suppressing grief, sadness, frustration, even anger can have detrimental effects on one’s self-esteem and mental health. And here’s one thing that is worth mentioning: we as humans interrelate body and mind too much. It’s natural, of course. No fun in saying a stressed mind is in a stressed body.
Ways to go through a catharsis
Below we are having a list of media that offer catharsis.
- Literature (reading books) and watching
- Therapy (talking about your past experiences, reliving them, with a friend or some professional)
- Even, dreams are a medium of catharsis!
So, what’s the tip of the day?
Whenever and where ever you have a burst of emotions, let it go out then and there. Otherwise, it so happens, that pent up emotions take vent in a pseudo form.
For this, the first step is always to acknowledge what you are feeling. If you are sad, you are SAD. What usually happens is, one is sad inside, but frustrated and aggressive outside.
Secondly, confront the cause. This cause may also be a person, a dear dear friend, loving parent. Face it, otherwise, suffer.
Hope this helps in dealing with what you are feeling!
