The premier league season is on a countdown to a restart date of 12th September. In the meantime, clubs are currently involved in pre-season friendlies to shape up. Alternately, trying out new players to get a feel of what they have on offer is another motive for the pre-season friendlies.
Over the weekend, the Gunners took on MK Dons in a pre-season friendly encounter. The Emirate faithful came out triumphant; beating the League one side by 4-1. William Saliba, the central Defender Arsenal, bought from Lille last summer, featured and put in a superb performance.
Arsenal fans have gone into overdrive in their praises for the young man. They have described and associated him with all the useful epithets of a defender. Some say he is a beast, while others call him the rock of Gibraltar. In my opinion, the defender is a decent acquisition for Arsenal, but it is still too early to judge.
With due respect to MK Dons, I want the fans to understand that the quality of the opposition cannot be like that of a premier league standard. Moreover, this is a friendly match which the opposition, as well, uses to take a look at their fringe players. It is not yet Uhuru for Saliba, yet I am one of those who expect him to flourish in the premier league.
Let us be patient and see when he confronts the likes of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, Mo Salah and Rashford in the premier league. Playing against world-class strikers will, in my opinion, brings out the best in a defender. William Saliba will no doubt excel; in the meantime, let us wait and see how he fares in the premier league.
Waiting for the premier league is necessary, so that we do not speedily assign him titles we will want to take back after few weeks in the competition.
