Harmony at the Workplace
How many of us have often experienced having a bad day at work? Most of us, especially those who work, know it’s painful. Not getting the right appraisal, misunderstanding and not being appreciated are only some reasons of having bad days at work, but the situation might vary because there might be other ones ahead. I work with foreigners, so the common problem I face is miscommunication. My colleagues do not know proper English, which often leads to misunderstanding. My colleagues tend to shout, and our natural human behavior is shouting back at them. Nonetheless, what is the benefit of this way in dealing with the issue? We, in fact, do not speak to each other or may end up having hard feelings towards each other, which is of no good to us, at all.
However, we can totally avoid this and have a harmonious work environment if we do the following:
- Try to Understand from their Point of View
We often tend to focus on ourselves and blame others, which means we are not able to understand thoughts or situations from the perspectives of others. This is, hence, a wrong attitude towards people, whether it is at work or in other places, in general. We should give time and be patient to understand what the other person is trying to say or is going through.
- Remain Calm
If the other person shouts at us or misbehaves, we always think of how they could dare do that. In addition, we also tend to behave likewise, which is going to make the situation worse. However, we need to know that acting in such a way is not beneficial to us. If they are being rude, it clearly is their problem, not yours. Thus, try to remain calm during the situation. When they cool down, they might realize their mistake and apologize.
- Try to Make them Understand What You are Trying to Say
Sometimes, we try to convey our thoughts to people, and if they are not able to understand, it might irritate us. Nonetheless, we need to think about how we can make other people clearly understand our perception. If they are not able to perceive it orally, then we can write or illustrate with the help of similar situations or examples. If there is a communication problem like that in my office, you can seek help from other people, who are familiar with both languages. You can also go for the use of technology like Google translate.
- Respect Seniors and Love Juniors
We should always learn to respect seniors and be polite and humble with our juniors. This is a general life rule, rather than only an office advice. It is also said that our moral values are reflected by the behavior we show towards people whose levels are than ours. This helps make a huge impact on your office staff. Finally, it is believed that what you give goes back to you, isn’t it?
- Learn to Forgive
We need to understand that we do not have the same mindset, values, and perception. We can be on different pages, and we need to accept that. Therefore, if any situation ever occurs, we should not forever hold on to the grudges. Learn to let go of whatsoever bad that lies there, for it is extremely toxic for your personal growth.
Lastly, do some meditation at the start of the day. You do not need to take the whole time; just 10 minutes would be enough. This will help calm your mind down and make you think clearer if any tough situation arrives. Simply, you can take better decisions with a clearer mind.
