Corruption is one of the most notorious evils of mankind. Throughout the course of human history, there have always been some corrupt elements in society. These elements spread corruption in the land and give rise to similar elements that further promote corruption. In my view, corruption begins when someone starts thinking only about himself. When a person wants to progress without entertaining the difference between right and wrong. Selfishness is the mother of corruption. A selfish person only wants to gain more, and not to contribute more towards what he is gaining from. The most common form of corruption is financial corruption. And mostly all the forms of corruption usually originate from some financial aims. That’s why Greed is such a big curse that it breeds a monster called corruption.
Here I want to discuss some means that can help decrease corruption in our society.
Accountability through rule of law
Rule of law is the basic and a reasonable way to control corruption or any other wrongdoing in society. When there are proper laws regulating our businesses and conducts in or jobs, then every person has a sense of responsibility. In such an environment a person feels accountable. This feeling and civic sense prevent him/her from a lot of evil acts and wrongdoings. When we are fully aware that if we do something wrong or unlawful and caught while doing so, then surely we will be punished for it, then most probably we shall not indulge in such acts. Because such acts may provide us some benefit but in the longer run, they are going to cause us damage. And why would and should we do something if its damages outrun its benefits.
In this regard, another equally important thing is that the law should clearly define all the forms of corruption as a crime. And there should be no relaxation or relief of any form for such criminals. Because when something is clearly defined as a crime then it has two outcomes. Firstly, the criminal can not escape the punishment if he is properly prosecuted. Secondly, it has a psychological impact on people, and they don’t indulge in corruption because of the fear of even blamed as a criminal.
Education Stops Corruption
Education is a great tool to fight all crimes. Because education is something that brings a change on a scale beyond the reach of any other known mean. Most of the revolutions that changed the shape of history started with educated people. Education in any form makes society a better place for living. If today we want to eradicate evils from the world then education is where we should put our maximum focus.
The reason is the things we learn as a child to be right or wrong go a long way in our psychological build-up. During childhood, the things that are taught as wrong or evil have the potential of becoming taboo for us. Because we grow up hating those things. And this feeling of hatred towards the evils like corruption can be very helpful in eradicating these evils from the society. This education is not limited to schools and kindergartens. Parents can and should also instill these virtuous values in their children.
Justice Avoids Corruption
This is very much linked with the first point which outlines the importance of accountability before the law. When there is a rule of law then justice prevails in society. And a just society has a very low ratio of corruption as compared to an unjust and lawless society. Because the acts of a human depend very much on his/her inner state. And injustice creates feelings of deprivation among the people. People with such feelings are more inclined to overlook the moral absolutes and commit to wrongdoings. Therefore, if our governments are sincere towards eradicating corruption then they must first create a just system in our countries. And we are also equally responsible to uphold all lawful and moral standards of justice and equality as far as we can.
Accountability after death
I have explained the factors that in my consideration can play important roles in controlling corruption. But all these ways can fail in fulfilling their purpose. We see a lot of examples around us where despite all these above-mentioned parameters, corruption is prevailing. Indeed, it is true.
All the systems and ways can fail except one. And that is the belief that our religions give us. If you are a religious person and you believe that God has created this world to test us. He is going to hold us all accountable for our deeds. If we are obedient to God and live righteous lives, then God will give His verdict in our favor. Otherwise, we will be sentenced to great punishments by Him. If we truly believe in this, then we are certainly going to avoid corruption in all its forms. Because we fear the trial that we can not escape. In my opinion, this belief and system of faith is the ultimate solution for the eradication of corruption and other evils.
