The Champions League quarter-final match between Atalanta and PSG may have been won and lost, but fallouts continue to reverberate. The game ended in a 2-1 advantage PSG, as PSG scored two quickfire last-minute goals to salvage an almost lost game. PSG will now meet RB Leipzig who defeated Diego Simione’s Athletico Madrid by the same margin.
From the records, Neymar Da Silva Santos Jr of PSG earns much the same as the entire Atlanta team combined. L’Equipe reports that Neymar makes around €36m per year, which is slightly over €30m net and that is still without bonuses which could raise his annual salary towards €40m per year.
Meanwhile, Atalanta’s top earners are captain Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez, Duvan Zapata, and Luis Muriel. They all have a reported €1.2m yearly paycheck which could rise to €1.8 through a series of bonuses. If you add up all the wages of the Atalanta squad, they will earn between 33 and 36 million euros per year. It is similar to what Neymar alone takes home at PSG.
Interestingly, the financial gulf between the two clubs did not show on the field of play. PSG struggled to get a grip on the game throughout the match. Atalanta started the scoring in the 26th minute and held on till the dying minutes of the game. Unfortunately for them, the introduction of Kylian Mbappe added more pace to the PSG attack. Ultimately, in the 90th and 93rd minutes of the match, PSG scores two goals to turn the game on its head.
To be fair to Neymar Jr, he was very influential in the game. He justified his price tag and regularly drove the PSG team forward. He should have put them ahead in Lisbon inside three minutes and missed another great chance before the break. There was the nutmegging of Atalanta’s goalscorer Mario Pasalic. Neymar also beat two more players and shot a yard full from 20 yards. He ended the game with seven shots, four key passes, and an assist.
Neymar won 9 fouls vs Atalanta, the most by a player in a single #UCL game so far this season. He also completed 16 dribbles. Neymar’s talent is undeniable but the gulf in his earnings compared to the entire Atalanta team depicts the unpredictable nature of football and more enjoyable to watch.
