The Almighty has endowed the human being with many resources. Of all the resources that the human being has been endowed upon the only constant resource is time. Once the time is lost it is lost forever. Procrastination is a bane for us as it is a stealer of time. Opportunities once lost may never present themselves again. Greek philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle had specifically coined a word for such behavior Akrasia. Akrasia in Greek means a lack of self-control.
Procrastination has often been equated to a form of Laziness. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. Social Psychologists see it as responsible behavior to avoid bad feelings like stress or unpleasantness of the task itself.
Time is a great leveler for you to show respect to time and time will respect you back. Here are some steps to help you deal with and prevent procrastination:
- Sensitize Yourself- Putting off things indefinitely for an unreasonable period is procrastination. Half the problem is solved by mere recognition of it. In our heart of hearts, we know that sometimes we are going easy on tasks. In case you want a more objective evaluation to assess whether you are procrastinating or not take a self- test quiz which are readily available on various online platforms.
- Reward Yourself- Sometimes the adverse effects of procrastinating a task are visible in the long term and therefore may not immediately deter you from putting an activity on Make a list of three activities daily which in all likelihood you may procrastinate. An exercise for this should be carried out every day in the evening before going to sleep. Fix small rewards for yourself to do the activity on time. The rewards can be simple like treating yourself in your favorite restaurant for dinner, A word or two to encourage yourself is not a bad idea either. Scientific researches have enough evidence to suggest that the human mind reacts very positively to the reward mechanism.
- Start Early: Beginning a task is the most difficult part of a task. If you start a task early there is all likelihood that you will not feel stressed, because, by the time you know it, it will be done.
- Eat your Frogs first: It may take a little effort to try your hands on something which you don’t like very early in the day. However, the best strategy to counter it is by just buckling and getting it done very early in the morning. This will pave the way for the day and every other task will seem easier and will take a shorter amount of time.
