Football is my most favorite sport. And I am going to tell you about my love story with football. Here I must mention that by football I mean Soccer and not the other game called Rugby.
I was a cricket lover and not interested in football until 2013. I was 15 years old then. At that time, football was nowhere in my life and it did not have a place in my heart. I loved cricket and being a Pakistani, it was a natural thing to love cricket. I played cricket, I talked cricket and I watched cricket. In short, the only sport that was in my life was cricket.
Then there came the fall of 2013, when one day in our school game period, some of my friends played football in the same ground where I was busy playing cricket with my friends. I watched them and even taunted them while describing as cricket being superior to football. But that was the time when the seed of love for football was first sown in my heart. That week, I talked about it with my friends who were already football fans. And slowly I started liking it.
The following week when the game period came, I played football rather than cricket. And surprisingly I found that I had some natural talent in this game. We played a match in the game period which I don’t remember who won. But I remember that I found football a very interesting and enjoyable game that day. So, that was the first time in my teenage when I properly played football. And that was when I began to love football and my interest in cricket started declining.
“Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.”
Then I also started watching football. Premier League was what I got interested in because my friends also regularly watched it. They were already fans of big clubs. One of my friends was a fan of Arsenal and Real Madrid and the other was a fan of Chelsea. I remember that the first match that I saw was between Manchester City and Arsenal. Manchester City won that match although I supported Arsenal. Then I kept on watching on TV and YouTube. Then there came a match between Manchester City and Manchester United at Etihad Stadium in September 2013. And I remember that match very clearly because that was the first complete match that I watched. Man City won and Man United lost in that match.
In that match, Man City scored the first four goals and crushed United. In the last 10 minutes, United got a free kick in Man City’s half. Rooney took it and scored. Although that made almost no difference in the result as United’s defeat was certain but I loved that goal. That was a beautiful curler that went to the right upper corner, touched Joe Hart’s gloves, and then touched the net. Most Manchester United fans would just have ignored that goal as it was no good to the result, but I loved it. And I remember it as one of my best memories in football. That day I became Rooney’s fan. And the following days, after knowing how good Manchester United is as a football club, I became a United fan as well.
Since then, I have been a diehard United fan. Although United haven’t achieved much since Alex Ferguson left but the hope that United will be back where it belongs is what keeps us going. I loved some other players as well. Robin Van Persie, Juan Mata, Steven Gerrard, Buffon, Xavi, Iniesta, and Ferdinand are some of my favorite players. One player that I love to watch is Andrea Pirlo. For me, he is one of the best midfielders in football. He has retired now but I still love to watch his old performances.
As for cricket, I no longer play it. Although I still watch some matches and sometimes play with friends. But football is my passion now and this passion keeps growing. This is my story. Although loves can’t describe my love for football but I tried to share it in the best way I can. Every sport is good but football has some special place in my heart.
