The clock in the nearby church struck 8:00. It was then he realized that he was late for home. He recalled his children asking to bring sweets when he reached back home. Realizing the time the sweet shop closes he rushed out of the site saying goodnight to his friend. The shop was 1km away from his construction site. Hurriedly he walked and he almost covered the distance to the shop. He crossed the street and took his way towards the shop which was located nearby and from there hardly one-kilometer walk to reach his home. No people were seen outside in the street and the street was also unlit. There are only a few houses to be seen. He had taken another path to buy something from the sweet shop. The path he had taken also heads towards his home but was a little longer path. After buying sweets he walked towards his home thinking the children would be happy to see him with the sweets. His path was seen in his phone’s torchlight and he thanked his wife to have reminded him to carry the phone with him. As he walked and took the turn towards his home he saw a van which was lit in the inside and the cry of a child could be heard. At first, he decided not to move towards the van because he thought: “What if it is a family inside?” Still, resisting his hesitation he walked towards the van and to his horror, he found a little girl laid down by one guy on the back seat of the van and he was trying to strap her. The other two were sitting in the driver’s seat and another one next to the driver seat. They couldn’t see him since there were no mirrors on the van. Seeing this, walked a few steps backward and hid and cried out help! help! so that he couldn’t be spotted by the men inside the van. Hearing the crying sound those three men were panic-stricken. The two people who were sitting in the front called out the name of the guy at the back of the van asked him to leave the kid and they three fled the scene. After they were gone he approached the girl and asked her: “ Are you alright ?” Since he knew to ask her, who they were, what were they trying to do with her? didn’t seem the right questions to ask. Because he had in mind: “After all she is just a kid hardly his son’s age” How would she know what their intentions were? Let the police do that job.
He sat on the desk, holding the child close to him, which was laid for the petitioners. The time was fifteen minutes past 9:00, night. He looked at the clock that was hanging in the police station and thought:“ Oh, I forgot my kids who will be waiting for me to reach home”, looking at the sweets. He couldn’t make a call too because, at home, there were no cell phones. As his thoughts started to take his mind’s presence, a constable came out and informed him to come inside. He left the girl behind and walked into the office room bending a little to show respect to the Inspector who sat in front of him. He waited for the Inspector to tell him to take the seat. As he tends to sit down, Inspector shoots the first question at him:“ Do you know this girl before?” asked the Inspector. “ No, Sir “ the reply came. See, you have two options here in front of you, you can either run away leaving the girl behind or move on with the case . If you go on with the second choice you will be in great trouble “ said the Inspector. Because I will file a case against you citing that you tried to torture the little girl out there. Sir, but I didn’t do anything said the man. The inspector replied more calmly:“ If I say you did means, you have done it, that’s the end of it”. “You may take her and leave now, and keep in mind never try to act smart added the inspector. The man understood the inspector was trying to help the people who tried to torture the kid. And he had the feeling if he moves on with the case both himself and the girl will be in trouble. Otherwise, if he leaves it there, that will be the end of the case. But the other part of his mind told him not to do so because if he leaves the case midway the girl will again be in trouble and justice will not be given to her. The only advantage is that he will be left alone from the case. The man tried convincing himself but couldn’t.
As he walked with the girl in his hands, the girl asked innocently “Where are you taking me, Uncle”. He replied to her:“ I am taking you to my home” and gave a smile to her. But she didn’t notice it, as she was busy looking for her own house on the way. At last, the girl pointed towards a small hut and told him: “ That’s my home’’. The man looked at her and asked:“ Is it ?’’ again glanced at her home pitifully. When they reached in front of the hut the girl ran towards her hut calling out some lady’s name. That was probably her grandma thought the man to himself when the lady came out of the small house. After he narrated the whole story, grandma didn’t have any expression on her face. She just stood there like that without saying a word. It was then he realized that she was deaf and couldn’t talk as well. He was about to ask her some queries about the little girl. But she didn’t seem to understand a word he was saying . So, without saying much the man took the girl and ran towards his home hoping the little girl would have a better life there.
