What Are Avocados?
Avocado is a type of fruit that is also known as the alligator pear. This is due to the pebbly skin and the fact that it resembles the shape of a pear. They grow in the warmer regions of the world on a tall evergreen tree.
The fruit is picked before it is ripe so that it can be shipped around the world before it is spoiled. It is available year-round in the fresh products section in most of the grocery stores. When purchasing avocados, try to buy them while they are still green, and allow them to ripen in your home. This will prevent them from bruising due to over-handling.
As avocados ripen, the green shell will turn into a dark color, but the inside will remain a nice light yellow-greenish color. The inside flesh also becomes soft as avocado ripens.
There are several different varieties and they include Hass, Fuerte, Zutano, Gwen, Pinkerton, and Reed.
