Pierre Emerick Aubamayang, the prolific Arsenal striker, will enter the final year of his contract with Arsenal in a few months. It is always a delicate time for Club/player relationships regarding contract extension or otherwise. In Aubamayang’s situation, speculations are rife concerning his future. Will Aubamayang extend his contract or not? That is the question on everyone’s lips.
Arsenal has been in this dilemma often in recent times. It happened with Van Persie who got sold to Manchester United. In the same vein, Alexis Sanches became a contract rebel that prompted a swap deal for Mkhitaryan. Unfortunately, in Aaron Ramsey’s situation, Arsenal allowed him to walk away free.
The board may not want to make similar mistakes with Aubamayang. Detailed below are three reasons Arsenal should keep hold of their star performer.
1. Aubamayang’s goals: Without Aubamayang’s strikes, Arsenal would have been fighting relegation. Aubameyang’s 22 goals have been responsible for 23 out of Arsenal’s 56 points in the league this season. That’s equivalent to seven wins and two draws, which is just exceptional.
His number of games to reach 50 goals is fewer than any other player in Arsenal’s history. Since February 2018, only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe, and Ciro Immobile have more goals than him across the top five European leagues. He jointly shared the Golden Boot award last season and was beaten to it this year by Leicester’s Vardy. Vardy scored 23 against Aubamayang’s 22 goals.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry admits the club would be nowhere without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
2. Aubamayang’s demeanor: The Arsenal striker is known to be a gentleman on and off the field. Aside from being the captain, he has got an easily likable personality. He seems to have a good rapport with all members of the squad, especially with his strike partner Alexandre Lacazette.
In the light of this, Arsenal needs to be doing all they can to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tied down on a new contract, says Alan Smith. According to him, “others can be sacrificed” in a bid to free up funds.
Arteta has stated his confidence that a new deal with Aubameyang is in the offing. If there’s half a chance of persuading Aubameyang to stay, as [Mikel] Arteta hints, the club has got to grab it. The team is far too reliant on his nose for goals.
3. Aubamayang the captain: How many times must Arsenal sell their captain? In a bid to move forward and compete favorably with rivals, Arsenal must ditch specific attributes. One of which is selling their captain. At his peak and being our Captain Thierry Henry was sold to Barcelona.
Fabregas followed suit as our captain to the same Barcelona. Information reaching us has it that Barcelona is circling to pounce and buy Aubamayang. Aubameyang’s departure will leave a vast hole that any possible replacement couldn’t immediately fill.”
Did you know? Aubameyang is the first Arsenal player to score 20+ goals in consecutive Premier League season since Thierry Henry (five seasons between 2001-02 and 2005-06).
Arsenal is still to come to an agreement with Aubameyang over a new contract. The Gabonese international will have just a year left on his deal at the end of this season, and the Gunners might sell him to avoid losing him for free next year.
If Aubameyang doesn’t renew his deal and is happy to stay for another year before leaving on a free, I believe Arsenal should keep him. Chances of getting into the champions league next season without Aubameyang are slim.
With him, I believe Arsenal can achieve their goal. Transfer activity is likely to be minimal this year as a result of the challenging financial environment. Our rivals competing for champions league spots are unlikely to strengthen massively this year. With Arteta’s rejuvenated, ever-improving Arsenal side and Aubameyang in the front three, I firmly believe in Arsenal’s chances to finish in the top four next season.
