Luthuli Avenue is a street that runs from the River Road and connects to City Hall Way via Ambassador. Luthuli Avenue is currently among pedestrian desire-line because of its new look. Initially, the avenue had challenges of congestion, pollution, and small pedestrian space. The current developments have solved most of the challenges within the avenue.
In May 2018, various stakeholders held a meeting with the main aim of bringing change to the avenue. In the meeting, issues around mobility, transport, and walkability were discussed. Also, in the meeting, various stakeholders were encouraged to work together to solve problems experienced on Luthuli Avenue. Business owners and Nairobi city residents were all in together. This article focuses on the new look of Nairobi’s Luthuli Avenue.
Luthuli Avenue is currently a renowned one-stop retail and wholesale business for electronic goods and repair services. Most of these businesses display their adverts for their products. You can find the best brands of mobile phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, and other electronic goods in this avenue. Anyone using this street is perceived as a potential customer and sellers are mostly seen to compete for the customers.
Hawkers and peddlers have also increased along the street. These hawkers sell goods to pedestrians at relatively cheaper prices. However, the city authorities constantly interfere with the hawker’s activities by arresting them.
Luthuli avenue is connected to tarmac roads. Well-painted poles divide the tarmac roads into different lanes divided into different lanes. Therefore, the vehicle lanes are separated well from pedestrian lanes. Road signs and street lights are strategically located along the road with CCTVs installed at various locations. All these have reduced cases of theft, accidents, insecurity, and traffic jams. Matatus, motorcycles, and taxis are amongst the means of transport available within the avenue.

Also, some petrol stations with ample parking spaces are aligned along the avenue. Lastly, there are currently public toilets managed by the Nairobi City County government. Most recently, due to the corona pandemic, various stakeholders have advocated for keeping Luthuli Avenue clean. With the campaign, various litter bins with the writings ‘keep Luthuli Clean, have been located along the avenue. Also, strategic hand-washing places have been set up as COVID 19 containment measures.
The Luthuli avenue harbors various bars, restaurants, and lodges. These businesses offer many kinds of products with quality guaranteed. The bars and restaurants are well designed and strategically located along the avenue. Products offered by these businesses include food, beverages, accommodation amongst others.
In conclusion, Luthuli avenue has gained a new look due to the cooperation of various stakeholders. The new changes have impacted positively to the business people and customers within the avenue.
