Life after corona
Coronavirus whose appearance we first heard from a city of China; Wuhan has spread all over the world. The first case reported to WHO was on 31 December 2019 as a case of pneumonia. On 11 March 2020, it was declared a pandemic by the WHO. According to the WHO, it has spread across 216 countries. Life after corona might never be the same. This viral disease has affected millions of people, and it has taken countless lives as well. There is no vaccine or cure of this virus yet, and the virus is spreading like wildfire. The virus will leave its marks on crucial things such as education, industries, economy, social norms and habits, government surveillance, religion, and sports. However, it may bring some positives such as more robust global trade, better primary healthcare, and hygiene habits.
Negative Impacts on life after corona
The mode of education might change in a Post-Corona world. All educational institutions have been closed and switched to online platforms for teaching. Some universities might adopt this online education way and may never return to the traditional way of teaching. As there is unequal access to technology and educational resources, the educational process will take a hit, and equal education opportunities will be slim. Apart from this, all stages of education will be affected notably Primary as according to a study, kindergarten students will lose 67% of their literacy ability (literacy loss in kindergarten children during COVID-19 school closure). The way of education might be changed forever. Many significant industries are affected by corona, and they may never recover the damages they received during this pandemic.
Many airline industries may become insolvent as warned by two major Airline companies Etihad and Emirates. According to IATA, 40 % of people will not travel for six months or more. Most of the countries will have restrictions placed on them, and this will harm the Airline Industry. Apart from this, the tourism industry might never gain its pre-pandemic strength. People will be reluctant to travel to other areas. Transport and Construction Industries will also be affected as exhausted and weak governments may not prioritize development for a long time.
Economies of countries will also be at a disadvantage once the virus is gone. It might take years for economically weak or dependent countries to cover up the losses suffered during the pandemic. Sadly, some might never recover. According to the IMF, the global economy will shrink by 3% this year. Moreover, the rise in unemployment rates will also prove to be a headache for governments, as there will be fewer opportunities. The US alone has received 30 million claims of unemployment this year (BBC). The decline in the economy has been described the worst since the great depression of the 1930s. This decline may bring many countries on the verge of recession. Coronavirus will bring the economy of several countries at a disadvantage.
After this global pandemic, there will be a noticeable change in social norms and habits worldwide. Instead of formal meeting-in-person, people would prefer to communicate using online modes. Apart from this, people would prefer to skip handshakes and would not be reluctant to follow social distancing. These changes might not attract attention now, but once life normalizes, we will realize these changes. More and more people will seek not to go to avoid crowded places, and our relationship with such places such as schools, restaurants, offices, and social gatherings will never be the same.
Government surveillance will be a worry for those people who respect their privacy in the post corona world. Government interference in private life could be worrisome. In South Korea, by scanning mobile data, the government can find those people might be infected (The Wall Street Journal)(https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-paves-way-for-new-age-of-digital-surveillance-11586963028). In Israel, the government tracing smartphones to detect the potential spread of the Corona Virus (Aljazeera). The governments will continue to use such measures, and at the same time, invading the universal right of privacy.
Religion will be another aspect of life that would be affected. In many countries, religious gatherings and ceremonies have aided the transmission of Coronavirus, and as a result, the very essence of religion is in danger. People might never get religious freedom before the outbreak of this virus. The rituals of each religion are the essence of the religion and rituals such as hajj for Muslims, puja for Hindus, and gathering for Christians might never be the same. Holy places and gathering will have specific restrictions placed on them, and this will affect people directly as religion plays a very significant part in people’s life.
Another area of life that would be affected is sports. This pandemic has led to the cancellation of all major sporting events. The emergence of new rules and regulations could change the way we watched sports. In cricket, now the players cannot use their spit on the ball. In football, players cannot celebrate together and must maintain social distancing. There will be Tests for corona before each match, and the players will have to play in crowd-less stadiums. Institutions of the sport will also suffer losses as a result.
Positive Impacts on life after corona
Apart from the negativity, there would be some positive outcomes., global trade would be more reliable than ever. The pandemic made the world realize how interdependent countries are on each other. Even in this pandemic, equipment such as testing kits and masks are moving across the borders. The global supply chain will be even more reliable after the pandemic than it was before. Moreover, the pandemic has made us realize the importance of primary healthcare. Before this outbreak, the countries did not feel such dire need of hospitals and medical equipment. The governments across the globe will be focusing on health reforms and willing to allocate a fair share of the budget to health sectors.
Most importantly, the world will move to better hygiene habits. Most of the people will adopt habits such as regular hand washing and use of sanitizers. It would be beneficial as this would ward off the threats of other diseases such as common flu.
Covid-19 is no ordinary event, and it will leave its mark on almost every sphere of life once it has gone. Events such as this happen after centuries, and they reshape the lives of people. No one could say with certainty how life would be after this pandemic, but life would never be the same.
