“Taking the wrong train may take you to the right destination” as captain Ri Jeong Hyeok said in one of the scenes in a popular K-drama series I watched in Netflix recently. Deep realization of this thought and pondering occurred to me while I continuously watch the movie series with 16 episodes which were first aired around December 2019. This is a personal review made this pandemic, several months after the movie series was shown to the public. Since many of us suffered a lot because of the unexpected circumstance that may seemed to be a biological war over States paralyzing the economy and many, many were just forced to stay in their homes, many people stopped from the usual routines, and here I am, spent my entire quarantine days during lock-down watching K-dramas and animated films. This is not to promote k-dramas because I want to promote Korea or Koreans. This is a product of my realizations and appreciations of what I observed from the story-line, the cinematography, the values and how it can uplift someone else’ morale and other great things. In this time of uncertainty and fear, where nobody seemed to be brave enough to go against the dictatorship and manipulations of those in the limelight and power, many people started to do things differently. Let me take my self as an example here, here I am writing this review because I was really amazed how great love can conquer all; how someone’s values and principles in life can be change many lives; how, political theories and principles control the way of living of many; how some government officials go beyond their limit despite of the laws that they uphold, ideas like these extremely came into my inquisitive mind because of watching the movie. A person may become extremely weird sometimes due to the environment or due to circumstance he may be in.
K-dramas like Crash Landing On You never failed to make us in-love and motivated. Morale is always there, sometimes after watching movie, we may cry or we may smile, sometime, we may get triggered or even get terrified. Ending of love story or series movie doesn’t always fall like fairy tale does, that it would always end with happily ever after. However, admit it or not, most of us may want to have a happily ever after ending but, it depends on the writer and director of the movie. In our life, we are the director and even the writer of it. As Se-ri said when she was about to go paragliding in Seoul, South Korea, “staff asked: why does the wind blow? It blows to move on not to stay. The wind needs to keep moving for me to fly”. We all have our challenges in life and we face all of those every day. Life may seemed to dark like a nimbus cloud but we tend to find ways how to get a cumulus or stratus cloud. Thus, in my case, in watching movie, I always prefer movies with happily ever after ending. Because after all, life always brings us the challenges like how the wind blows and how we feel the wind, that is why if we’ll make our life lighten by choosing our preferred path, or preferred things, then life may be at least get a sense of balance. After how many months of staying at home because the government’s mandate in consonance to their aim of protecting public health and public welfare, I started to watch movies and write reviews, things that I don’t normally do. Many can relate perhaps, because since time is already given, now the challenge is to spend it wisely. Maybe back then, some may say, I don’t have time because of my busy schedules at work, or because of a lot of appointments but, if you are one of the thousands or millions of people who stayed at home and do nothing during the pandemic, definitely, you did something that your rarely do prior the quarantine. Reading may be one of my hubbies, because I once dreamed to be a lawyer, and to be part of the Armed forces but, I never became pond of watching movies and writing review or any social media-related things until this pandemic came. Thanks to pandemic I was able to watch Crash Landing on You and fell in-love several times with the romantic scenes I watched. Anyways, no daring or bed scenes in the movie hahaha… everything were so educational and motivating. It seems that stories were well-tailored by the writers and editors, from the selection of location, the scripts, attire, story, cinematography, and many more, I can say that it is amazing. Not being bias, but, I learned now how two different worlds may or may not exist due to political reasons. How colliding ideas of leaders of a State can affect everyone in the society. One may live in a less advanced society due to conservatism, one may be progressive due to its liberalism. Discipline can greatly observed to the people living in North Korea, Military presence may be a great factor for keeping things great and steady or we may say in the past years, stagnant. I was greatly inspired by the men in uniform, how they showed honor, valor, and integrity to their country by rendering their sincere service and being loyal. Common features or even behavioral traits were perfectly shown by the military men in the movie. This may give us signal to do the same, do what is good and suppress what is evil. In event that we committed something wrong in the past, it is not yet late to change and repent. Same with what one of the military transcription men did when he got involved in wire tapping of conversations to monitor the actions of Captain Ri. Not only that, meddling and prying into the privacy of others were somehow shown by the female villagers in the movie, a common characteristics of married women in less urbanized places because they have more leisure time. The movie reminds us to avoid that. Though, same as the quote I used when I started this essay, it may be wrong but somehow, on the latter part, it may be good. In the women’s case it became an avenue to get along with Se-ri and build a good relationship to people in a place that you do not even know.
The story went well when Se-ri reached home and took care again of everything she owned. I was impressed how a difficult experience in life of being alone in a battle would change someone’s character. After everything that happened to her, Se-ri became more generous to her people, applied what she learned from the soldiers and became more emphatic than before. However, the strong personality was still there. I remember what she said to her brother and sister in-law, that there are three kind of people we cannot forget, first, those who were there when you are down, second those who were there when you are alone and down, and third those people who cornered you to be down. Perhaps, it is indeed correct not to forget those people but, for the third kind, we should not forget them but we should also learn to forgive them. However, forgiveness is different from condoning what they did. We’ll always look into the brighter side. For the four last episodes when the comrades were able to reach Soul, Korea, it became more entertaining and fun. I saw how family was formed by the comrades and with Se-ri. From North to South, their bonding was the same. Many scenes made me laugh and cry. Many scenes gave me realization that love can be anywhere. Love can be seen through the people we deal with each other everyday. Love can be seen or felt from the strangers we meet in an unfamiliar place. Love can be given by someone who we do not expect to meet. Love can bring us to the right destination. To love and to be loved, always make us happy. Establishing good relationship to the people around us because of love, makes us survive in all of our difficulties and challenges. We may feel lost now because of the current situation we are in, but this situation may bring us to the right destination we want to go.
