What are the major issues concerning the transportation sector world wide especially the developing countries. Waking up so early to hit the nuisance of Traffic for almost two hours over a distance of about 10 km. What are the causes of all this unwanted and undesirable loss of time.
First and foremost, let’s look at the fact that the cities are highly unplanned. What do I mean. When you look at a well planned city, it is zoned to allocate different areas for particular purposes or a particular zone can be planned to be self sufficient such that within a zone one can be able to obtain all the needs they would require to lead a normal and comfortable life. Where is that in our developing countries.
Secondly, most of the major services are centralized. Even with a will to stay out of the cities, one cannot be able to access the services they access while in the city like good cell reception, good restaurants, reliable water supply. In the end, one has got to move from a village somewhere in look for better services in the city. This causes a lot of congestion in the city. How? I believe all cities have got capacity that they can handle and if overflown, you will see the effects in congestion and increased crime.
Thirdly the means of movement themselves are not planned. Apart from planning a city, proper transportation means or modes have got to be in place. Not everyone can afford a private car. But there needs to be regulation of the public transportation which is highly lacking in the developing countries. This also causes congestion in the cities where even if thousands of roads were tarmacked, congestion would still be there. Why? Because of the lack of regulation of the public transport. The taxis park wherever they please. The motorcyclists do not have designated lanes. This is a huge cause for congestion in our cities as developing countries.
Let there be planned routes for the public road transport. Let other types of transport be invested in say the railways. This is the fastest and cheapest on ground transportation means. But why is it so hard for one to think of that? This is why. If railway stations are built for easy access to different areas, there will be easy access and hence development but who is the enemy to development, I don’t know.
If we look at the developed countries, they have invested highly in the railways. Say for Europe, you can traverse from Denmark all the way to Russia on train. How hard is that? Ease transportation means, spread the services and this will de-congest the cities hence the traffic reduction.
No matter how many highways, flyovers are constructed and the city is not planned, congestion is a factor that will always stay.
